Lower Silesia’s authorities cooperate on agglomeration trains
Special change-stops by train stations, links as frequent as trams and buses plus an integrated system of tickets for all means of public communication – these are the ideas for convincing Lower Silesia’s citizens to start using the agglomeration trains. An agreement concerning this matter has just been signed by representatives of local authorities.

A special team has been formed and given 18 months to prepare a consistent and reasonable concept of public transport. It should also include principles of financing the system by local authorities.

Among key objectives there are: launching a link between Wrocław Central Station – Airport Wrocław; and improving the following connections Wrocław Central Station – Wrocław Psie Pole – Oleśnica, Wrocław Central Station – Jelcz Laskowice, Wrocław Central Station – Wrocław Leśnica and Wrocław Central Station – Wrocław Pracze.

‘During the next couple of years, we intend to create a convenient network of railway transport in our region. We own 5 electric trains and 19 “railbuses”, but we already began searching for funds to purchase more of them.’ explained Mr. Rafał Jurkowlaniec, Marshal of Lower Silesia .

Trains should become an actual alternative to the city trams and buses. For this to be possible it is necessary to adapt the existing train stops and build new ones in the proximity of large residence areas. The new stops will be built as park & ride areas.

According to Mr. Rafał Dutkiewicz, first such hub will be created in Psie Pole. After that, similar facilities will appear in Leśnica, Pracze Odrzańskie and near Wrocław Mikołajów Station. Passengers will be able to leave their cars or bicycles and proceed to the city centre by train.

‘In order to maintain high rates of development in our region, we have to ensure mobility of our citizens. People need efficient communication to Wrocław. Hence the agreement.’ added Mr. Dutkiewicz.

Authorities of all the districts also intend to introduce a common system of tickets. It means that we should be able to pay for the trains with Urbancards or city transport tickets.

‘A condition essential to succeed in this venture is to implement an integrated tariff. The only rational solution is a uniform ticket for the entire agglomeration.’ emphasized Mr. Jurkowlaniec.

Additionally, the agreement allows the districts to organize bus transportation in areas of low urbanization, where railways are not viable.

Mr. Wojciech Adamski, Deputy Mayor of Wrocław and Mr. Jerzy Łużniak – member of the Lower Silesia’s Viovodeship Board will be responsible for coordinating the study.

The agreement was signed by: city of Wrocław, Lower Silesia’s Voivodeship, districts of: Legnica, Oleśnica, Świdnica, Trzebnica, Wałbrzych, Wołów, Wrocław, towns and communes of: Brzeg Dolny, Jelcz Laskowice, Kąty Wrocławskie. Prusie, Siechnice, Środa Śląska, Wołów, Żmigród, Świdnica, Czernica, Dlugołęka, Malczyce, Miektów, Miękinia, Oleśnica and Wisznia Mała.
